Global flooding has become one of the most important issues in discussions regarding the water crisis around the world. Various factors, including climate change, rapid urbanization, and inefficient management of water resources, are contributing to the increasing frequency and intensity of flooding. The impact is not only felt in economic losses, but also in public health and environmental damage. One real example is the flood disaster that hits South Asia every year. Countries such as India, Bangladesh and Pakistan often experience extreme rainy seasons, causing rivers to overflow and submerge thousands of hectares of land. In Bangladesh, for example, millions of people are forced to flee each year due to flooding caused by melting Himalayan ice and increased rainfall. In Europe, countries such as Germany and the Netherlands also face similar challenges. The 2021 floods in Germany, which damaged infrastructure and killed more than 180 people, show how vulnerable countries thought to be safe from natural disasters are. Inadequate drainage systems along with unexpected rainfall trigger chaos. Africa is also caught in a cycle of water crises. Although many areas are experiencing severe drought, several areas in the sub-Saharan region are experiencing major flooding. For example, in Nigeria, annual floods displace communities and cause food shortages. Various international organizations such as WHO and UNICEF have tried to overcome health problems that arise due to flooding, including airborne diseases. Meanwhile, in Latin America, flood disasters often hit countries such as Brazil and Colombia. Flash floods that occurred in Colombia caused major damage to infrastructure and people’s homes. During 2022, Brazil reported high death rates from flooding, indicating the need for better mitigation efforts. At the global level, this issue not only involves national governments but also international collaboration. Climate change conferences, such as COP26, often discuss solutions to increase resilience to flood disasters. It is hoped that sustainable water management efforts at the local level can mitigate these adverse impacts. The development of environmentally friendly technology is also an important part of the solution to the water crisis. Innovations in water treatment and efficient irrigation systems can help communities adapt to climate change. For example, using dams designed to collect excess rainwater could be a temporary solution. Public awareness of the need to protect the environment has also increased. Educational campaigns regarding wise management of water resources are urgently needed to prevent further water disasters. With better understanding and joint efforts, it is hoped that the negative impacts of flooding can be reduced, making room for sustainability in various parts of the world.
